Boston Spotlight – In the spirit of the festive season, Boston Rail’s Tom Anderton discusses his past, present, future and why working for Bostonair Group has allowed him to significantly develop his career.

Q: Hello Tom, what are your hobbies and pursuits away from work?

A: Generally, I enjoy a quiet life away from work with my supportive Partner, Samantha. I enjoy hiking, running and keeping fit. I have a very close family and network of friends that I keep in touch with, and I’m not averse to the occasional pint!

I have recently added an element of chaos into my life through acquiring a Cockapoo puppy we’ve called ‘Coco’.

Q: What is your professional background and your ‘past?’

A: Right at the very start of my career in 1997, I originally decided to work in Convenience Retailing and I was invited to join a 3-year management course in 1999. After the first year I had a change of heart and decided to read Marketing at the University of Lincoln. During my degree I took a placement in 2002 with a Training and Marketing Agency in the automotive sector. Even after my placement ended I worked for them during the final year of my degree in 2003-2004. I graduated with a 2:1 BA (Hons) in Marketing in July 2004.

Following University I took my first graduate role with Ideal Boilers, one of the largest employers in Hull. Here I learned the fundamentals and basics of Marketing from a practical point of view (applying the theory I’d learned at University). What stood out during my time at Ideal was the huge support I received from my immediate boss, and the senior team. I got on extremely well there and became a senior manager when I was still in my 20’s.

My career from 2010-2016 was spent with some of the UK’s leading manufacturers such as Swift Group, Symphony Group and Moores Furniture Group. Each role was a more senior Marketing—related role.

Q: Why did you decide to work in the Service industry? Why Bostonair?

After 12 years working for manufacturers I felt I needed a fresh challenge in a completely new sector. The reason I felt Bostonair was so compelling was the personalities of the Directors, the people-orientated approach of the business and the fact I wanted to influence right at the top of the business. I also wanted to develop my capabilities and move away from just being a Marketing professional. I saw an opportunity to get involved in commercial activity such as tenders

Q: What do you feel you’ve achieved so far at Bostonair?

I feel I’ve added a lot of value through demonstrating how you can use various digital tools, such as social media channels to generate leads. Some of these leads have translated into significant and sustained customer demand. Also supporting our online businesses in more than doubling revenue is another highlight during my time with Bostonair.

Q: So what does the present look like?

A: I had been undertaking market research for a couple of years, as a key business strategy was to investigate a potential new market to enter. During the latter part of 2019 we engaged with a well-known tier 1 rail provider and worked on a framework agreement so we could support them in 2020.

Whilst COVID has had an impact, 2020 has been establishing Boston Rail as a new division of the Group as part of our “bounce strategy”. Mark Parkes our Group MD indeed outlined this in a previous Spotlight article. I was delighted that Mark asked me to lead this new division of the organisation.

During 2020 we have engaged with around 40 Rail organisations and are in the process of becoming an approved supplier for a number of these. I’m excited about what 2021 could bring.

Q: What do you enjoy most about working most about Bostonair?

A: I think it’s all about people. Working with some incredibly talented, passionate people who are all pulling in the same direction.

Another reason I enjoy working at Bostonair is that you can directly see the impact you make either as an individual or part of the team.

Q: So, moving onto Boston Rail, what do you offer to Companies in the Rail sector?

Despite the current Pandemic, the Government are investing over £150 billion into the UK Rail infrastructure. This figure includes HS2, CP6 and “Project Speed” projects.

The UK Rail sector does not have enough people to undertake all these projects. Boston Rail offer a number of propositions including a 2-year entry-level programme that brings new talent from the ex-forces and other sectors such as automotive into the rail sector. We are looking to work with Tier 1 & Tier 2 suppliers who want to work with an organisation that will invest in new and existing talent. Our propositions cover Signalling, telecoms, Electrification and Rolling Stock.

Q: Where do you see your future Tom?

A: I have ambitious plans for Boston Rail and genuinely believe we can develop the business to become the go-to supplier of labour and other services for our customers. It is a tough challenge, but I firmly believe we offer something different, compelling and that we are operating with a tried and tested model.
